Free Software Subcultures: Memes, Mascots and Community Storytelling

Language: English

Free software communities have always produced their own culture: mascots, memes, inside jokes, and shared narratives.

This Birds of a Feather session invites participants to discuss how these cultural artifacts shape community identity, communication, and participation.

The conversation will also touch on independent narrative projects such as Talking Smacks, which explore free software culture through fictional characters, satire, and community storytelling.

Rather than a presentation, this session will be an open discussion about how free software ecosystems generate their own subcultures-and what role creative projects can play within them.

Free software is often discussed in technical, legal, or political terms. Yet communities around free software also produce rich cultural layers: mascots, memes, satire, in-jokes, fan creations, and shared stories that circulate across forums, conferences, and the fediverse.

These cultural artifacts are not merely decoration; they help shape community identity, transmit norms, and make complex technical ecosystems more approachable.

This Birds of a Feather session invites participants to reflect on questions such as:

How do memes, mascots, and fictional characters influence free software communities?

Can narrative or artistic projects strengthen community identity?

Where is the boundary between community culture and project branding?

How can independent creators interact respectfully with established communities?

The session will also briefly reference Talking Smacks, an independent digital narrative project exploring free software culture through fictional characters and satire. However, the primary goal is not to present the project itself but to open a broader conversation about cultural production within free software ecosystems.

Participants are encouraged to share examples from their own communities.

I’m Başak, creator and maintainer of the independent digital narrative project Talking Smacks, exploring the intersection of free software culture, memes, mascots, and community storytelling. I also participate as a Linux volunteer at Linux Türkiye Topluluğu (LTT), focusing on community, culture, and collaborative narratives within free software ecosystems.
